Q:
How to remove, inspect and install the Control Arm? Posted by Customer
A:
A special tool is necessary to separate the lower control arm ball joint from the steering knuckle. To begin, loosen the wheel lug nuts, apply the parking brake, and raise the front of the vehicle. Support it securely on jack stands and remove the wheel. Remove the lock pin from the castle nut and loosen the nut until there is a small gap between the knuckle and the nut. Install the ball joint separating tool, being careful not to tear the ball joint grease seal. Apply grease to the tool and once the ball joint stud is released, remove the castle nut and separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle completely. On 2007 Acura MDX models with the active damper system, remove the small arm linked to the system sensor from the control arm. On all other models, remove the bolts that attach the control arm to the sub frame. Inspect the control arm for any bends and replace if necessary. Check the bushings for cracks, tears, or wear and replace the control arm if needed. On 2007 Acura models, the rear bushing can be replaced by removing the nut and sliding the bushing off the shaft. When installing the new bushing, use a new nut and tighten it to the specified torque. To install, tighten the ball joint stud castle nut and use a new lock pin. Use new mounting fasteners for the control arm. On 2007 Acura MDX models, ensure that the round slotted 'stops' on each side of the control arm bushing are aligned correctly. Raise the outer end of the control arm with a floor jack and tighten the control arm-to-sub frame bolts to the specified torque. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. It is recommended to have the front wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. For 2007 Acura MDX models with the active damper system, have the vehicle checked by an authorized dealer service department if any dash warning lights related to that system stay on after the control arm installation.
