Q:
How to check and replace a worn ball joint on a Acura MDX? Posted by Customer
A:
Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling off the jack stands. Place a large pry bar under the ball joint and resting on the wheel, then try to pry the ball joint up while feeling for movement between the ball joint and steering knuckle. Now, pry between the control arm and the steering knuckle and try to lever the control arm down while feeling for movement between the ball joint and steering knuckle. If any movement is evident in either check, the ball joint is worn. Have an assistant grasp the tire at the top and bottom and move the top of the tire in-and-out. Touch the ball joint stud nut. If any looseness is felt, suspect a worn ball joint stud or a widened hole in the steering knuckle boss. If the latter problem exists, the steering knuckle should be replaced as well as the ball joint/control arm. Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. Using your fingers (don't use pliers), try to twist the stud in the socket. If the stud turns, replace the ball joint. The ball joints on these models are not replaceable; the entire control arm must be replaced if the ball joint has failed. The ball joint dust boot can be replaced if it is damaged. You should not replace the dust boot if it has been cracked or damaged while the vehicle was in use because dirt and other contaminants have probably gotten into the ball joint. However, if the dust boot was damaged during removal of the control arm, replace it. To do this, pry off the old dust boot and remove the retaining clip from it. Place grease at the base of the ball joint stud (the area that is normally covered by the dust boot). Push the new dust boot onto the ball joint until it seats into the groove at the base of the ball joint. A special tool is available to place the retaining clip into the groove on the boot, but with some effort, you can place the clip in position with your fingers while being careful not to damage the new boot with the clip in the process. Clean any excess grease off the tapered portion of the ball joint stud that seats into the steering knuckle, then reattach the ball joint to the knuckle. Tighten the ball joint stud castle nut to the lower torque figure, then, if necessary, tighten it a little more to line up the slots in the nut with the hole in the stud. Install a new lock clip. Install the wheel and lug nuts (if removed) and lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to the torque.

Q:
How should the new tie-rod end be installed for the 2001 Acura MDX? Posted by Customer
A:
Thread the tie-rod end onto the tie-rod to the marked position and connect the tie-rod end to the steering arm. Install the nut on the ball stud and tighten it to the torque. Install a new cotter pin. If necessary, tighten the nut a little more to allow insertion of the cotter pin. Never loosen the nut to align the cotter pin holes.
