Remove the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure, relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit module, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands, remove the rear part of the exhaust system, remove the fuel filler neck cover bolts and remove the cover, disconnect the quick-connect fittings for the fuel supply and return lines, disconnect the quick-connect fittings for the fuel tank EVAP vent hose, disconnect the bypass solenoid valve hose from the vapor control valve hard line, disconnect the EVAP hose from the two-way valve, disconnect the electrical connectors from the ABS rear wheel speed sensors, remove the rear stabilizer bar, remove the heat shield, detach both parking brake cable brackets, remove the rear brake caliper bolts and hang the calipers from the coil springs with wire, then remove the parking brake cables, remove the bolts that secure the lower ends of the shock absorbers to the rear knuckles, support the rear suspension subframe/fuel tank assembly with a floor jack, then remove the rear suspension subframe mounting bolts and lower the rear suspension subframe and fuel tank assembly, remove the four fuel tank strap bolts and remove the two straps, lift the fuel tank out of the rear suspension subframe, installation is the reverse of removal.

The fuel tanks in the vehicles covered are not repairable. If the fuel tank has been removed for cleaning, it's advisable to engage a professional with experience in this critical and potentially hazardous task. Even after cleaning and flushing the fuel tank, combustible fumes can persist. When the fuel tank is removed, it must not be placed in an area prone to sparks or open flames that could ignite the emanating fumes. Particular caution is necessary in garages with gas-type appliances, as they could pose an explosion risk.
