Acura Legend Heater Core
Acura Legend Heater Core provides a warm cabin by transferring engine heat to the cabin space. This compact fin-laden unit is positioned beneath the dash and is connected by hoses to the engine. As hot coolant is pumped through its passages by the engine, this heat escapes when the blower is applied to push air across the metal fins and into the cabin, keeping the occupants of the vehicle comfortable and the windshield clear of fog on cold mornings. Built of aluminum or brass, the Heater Core is similar to a small radiator, but it does the opposite, transferring heat inside rather than expelling it outside. Earlier Legend models and later ones share the same basic design, although the more recent systems have electromechanical blend doors and sensors to allow a degree of temperature fine-tuning or even splitting between driver and passenger. However, the basic Heater Core process remains the same. In addition, the component is able to act as an auxiliary radiator, which can provide a little help to engine cooling. Typical problems include clogging, leakage, and corrosion. Since it is deep behind the dashboard, getting to the Heater Core requires a substantial amount of disassembly, which makes it slow to replace on any Acura Legend. - Q: How to remove and install a Heater Core on an Acura Legend?A:Removal begins with disconnecting the negative cable from the battery. Next, drain the cooling system. Working in the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses and valve where they enter the firewall. Remove the instrument panel and the center console. Remove the heater controls. Label and detach the air ducts, wiring and controls still attached to the heater assembly. Unbolt the heating unit and lift it from the vehicle. Remove the screws and retainers, take out the old heater core and install the new unit. For installation, reassemble the heater unit and check the operation of the air control flaps. If any parts bind, correct the problem before installation. Reinstall the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Refill and bleed the cooling system, reconnect the battery and run the engine. Check for leaks and proper system operation.
