To remove the airbag module, ensure the front wheels are straight and disconnect the negative battery cable, waiting at least three minutes before proceeding. Remove the access panel from the bottom of the steering wheel to access the airbag module and horn connectors, then pull the connectors from their brackets and unplug them, noting that the airbag module connector has a sliding spring lock. Next, remove the airbag module fasteners from each side of the steering wheel, prying off any covers if necessary, and carefully set the airbag module aside. Disconnect the steering wheel switches, including the cruise control switch and any other equipped switches, then remove the steering wheel retaining bolt, marking the relationship of the steering wheel to the hub at the 12 o'clock position before reinstalling the bolt until about half an inch of threads are showing. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel, ensuring not to thread the puller bolts into the hub more than five turns to avoid damaging the airbag clockspring. Once the steering wheel is released, remove the puller and retaining bolt, taking care not to turn the steering shaft or change the direction of the front wheels to prevent damage to the airbag clockspring. If necessary, remove the steering column covers to access the clockspring; for 2002 and later models, unplug the clockspring electrical connectors and release the locking tabs to detach it from the combination switch assembly, while for 2001 and earlier models, unplug the clockspring connector and remove the three mounting fasteners. For installation, ensure the airbag clockspring is centered with the arrow pointing up, adjusting if the steering shaft was turned. Align the index mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft at the 12 o'clock position, ensuring the locating pins on the clockspring engage with the steering wheel and the notches align with the lugs on the turn signal canceling cam. Install and tighten the steering wheel bolt, reconnect all steering wheel switch connectors, reattach the airbag module with new fasteners, secure the electrical connectors for the airbag module and horn, and finally reconnect the negative battery cable.
