It is crucial that brake inspections are done at specific times and regular basis as brakes are important in vehicle safety. Potential system problem symptoms could be; the occurrence of a car being pulled to one side while braking, whistling or disc dragging, excessive brake pedal travel, pulsation felt on pedal or loss of fluid from the hydraulic system. Disc Brake Pads incorporate built-in wear indicators that produce high-pitched noise when they get to the stage where replacement becomes urgent hence preventing expensive damage to rotors. Inspect disc brakes by checking pad thickness through caliper inspection holes and replace pads below the specified thickness. If unsure or worried about their condition remove and clean them for a detailed check using friction material gauges. At the same time assess rotor thickness and replace it if it falls below the minimum specification, look for scoring, gouging, or burned spots which necessitate resurfacing if required. Check thoroughly for any damages that have occurred during installation including leaks and sores before attaching wheels onto such vehicles' systems like brake lines and hoses against fitting specifications among others. After removing rear drum brakes, examine lining thicknesses, contamination levels as well as overall conditions. The installation process of shoe return plus hold-down springs and adjusting mechanism must be followed correctly too and wheel cylinder leakage or cracked drums must also be addressed properly. To perform an operating check, depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off to ensure there is no change in the pedal reserve distance, then start the engine and depress the pedal; a slight drop indicates normal operation. For the airtightness check, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes, then slowly depress the brake pedal several times; if the pedal drops initially but rises after subsequent depressions, the booster is airtight. While the engine is running, depress the brake pedal and stop the engine with the pedal held down; if there is no change in pedal reserve travel after holding for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. When removing the power brake booster, which requires special tools, first remove the brake master cylinder, then locate and remove the pushrod clevis pin connecting the booster to the brake pedal, disconnect the hose from the engine to the booster, and remove the four nuts and washers securing the brake booster to the firewall. Slide the booster straight out from the firewall. For installation, follow the reverse procedures of removal, ensuring to tighten the booster mounting nuts to the specified torque and use a new cotter pin on the clevis pin. If replacing the power booster unit, measure the clearance between the master cylinder piston and the pushrod in the vacuum booster, applying a vacuum to the booster and measuring the distance from the pushrod to the mounting face. Adjust the pushrod length as necessary to achieve the specified clearance, then tighten the locknut. After final installation of the master cylinder and brake hoses, bleed the brakes.
