To check brake booster operation, first depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off to ensure no change in pedal reserve distance. Then, depress the pedal and start the engine; if the pedal goes down slightly, the operation is normal. For airtightness, start the engine, turn it off after a minute or two, and depress the brake pedal slowly several times. If the pedal goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after subsequent depressions, the booster is airtight. Also, depress the pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed; if there is no change in pedal reserve travel after 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. For removal, do not disassemble power brake booster units as they require special tools and are complex. To remove, first take off the brake master cylinder. Disconnect the hose from the engine to the booster, remove the cotter pin and clevis pin connecting the pushrod to the brake pedal, and remove the four nuts holding the booster to the firewall. Slide the booster out from the firewall.For installation, if a new booster is being installed, measure and adjust the length of the input rod. The installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring tight booster mounting nuts and a new cotter pin for the clevis pin. For a new unit, check pushrod clearance by applying a vacuum to the booster, measuring the pushrod protrusion, and adjusting as necessary to achieve the specified clearance. Finally, after installing the master cylinder and brake hoses and lines, bleed the brakes.
