To remove the rack and pinion assembly, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and draining the power steering fluid. Remove the steering shaft cover and lower pinch bolt, then loosen the front wheel lug nuts and raise the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the front wheels, panel under the driver's side of the instrument panel, and air filter housing. Secure the engine using an engine support brace or hoist. Remove the hose and line fittings at the rack and pinion, detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles, and disconnect the stabilizer bar links. Remove the engine splash shield(s), sub frame stiffener plate, exhaust system, driveshaft, pressure line brackets, and rear engine mount components. Detach the ground cable and bracket from the transmission, and mark the relationship of the sub frame and brackets to the chassis. Support the sub frame with two floor jacks and loosen the sub frame-to-chassis mounting bolts. Remove the front and rear sub frame-to-chassis bracket mounting bolts, then lower the floor jacks until the sub frame meets the loosened mounting bolts. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, rack and pinion stiffener bracket, and rack and pinion mounting clamp. Pass the rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel opening and remove it from the vehicle.
