The coolant temperature indicator system includes two essential components which are positioned on different engine areas. The first component includes an instrument panel-mounted temperature gauge and the second includes a coolant temperature sending unit which stands near the bleeder screw found at the upper radiator hose. A short circuit to ground in the wiring between the dash and sending unit should be checked as one of the first steps when overheating is indicated before the engine has adequately cooled down. Test the sending unit circuit with a brief ground connection using the wire to the sending unit and ignition power while the engine remains off for safety purposes and a gauges full scale deflection will indicate sending unit replacement is necessary. A problem within the gauge circuit could be the reason why the gauge fails to react. When replacing the sending unit begin by unscrewing it from the engine and then install the new part on the threads with sealant while maintaining engine coolant temperature below 100 degrees Fahrenheit because heat loss can occur during removal and always verify the fluid level following installation.
