    Q:
How to Remove and Install the Rear Shock Absorber on an Acura Legend? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, place it securely on jackstands, and remove the rear wheels for Integra models. Place a floor jack under the rear axle beam and raise it slightly to support the weight of the axle. From inside the vehicle, remove the trim panel and protective cap to access the upper mounting nut for the rear shock. Remove the shock absorber upper mounting nut while preventing the piston rod from turning with an Allen wrench, and also take off the big washer and rubber cushion. Slowly lower the floor jack until tension is removed from the coil spring, then unbolt the shock absorber lower mounting bolt to detach the lower end of the shock absorber from the axle beam, lower the jack completely, and remove the shock absorber and spring assembly. If inspecting the shock absorber, lay out the parts in order for reinstallation. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the smaller diameter coils of the spring are at the bottom, and tighten all fasteners securely while the vehicle is raised, but do not finalize the torque until it is back on the ground. For Legend models from 1986 through 1988, jack up the lower arm slightly, peel back the trunk side carpet, and remove the upper mounting nuts before lowering the jack. Remove the strut pinch bolt to disconnect the strut from the hub carrier, and detach the strut from the hub carrier. For 1989 and 1990 sedans and all coupes, remove the trunk side carpet, upper mounting nuts, clip for the parking brake cable from the trailing arm, and disconnect the stabilizer bar from the trailing arm. Remove the upper arm mounting bolts and the shock absorber lower mounting bolt, then pull the lower arm down to remove the shock absorber/coil spring assembly. For inspection or replacement of the shock absorber unit, ensure installation is the reverse of removal and tighten all fasteners to the specified torque values.
