The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavening crankcase vapors, which go through the crankcase where fresh air from the air cleaner circulates through blow-by gases and to the intake manifold via a PCV valve. Another PCV system has the PCV valve, a blow by filter and vacuum hoses connecting the engine to the remaining main components of the PCV system. The PCV valve restricts flow when the intake manifold vacuum is high, and under abnormal operational conditions like piston ring problems, the system allows excessive blow by gases to pass back through the crankcase vent tube and into the air cleaner for normal combustion to maintain idle quality.
