Stop the vehicle's front wheels from moving. Loosen the nuts holding the rear wheel on before lifting your car. Place the car in a safe position where you can raise it with jackstands, and then securely stabilize it at its back end. For autos with rear drum brakes, remove all brake drums first. Wedge the cable adjusting nut, then pull out the clamp from over the cable pipe. Remove the back-half of the Legend's exhaust pipe and heat shield since our work happens at the floorpan's center, where the cables hook to an equalizer. To detach the brake cable on the back drum brake, slide off the rear wheel's brake shoe and blow a small instrument into the lever where the wire meets up with the brake shoe to remove the cable piece. Squeeze the retainers' edges on the cable housing to push the cable through the backing plate using a 12mm wrench with an offset head to squeeze both sides at once. With rear disc brake models, pull off the clip and clevis to take the cable end off the caliper's actuator lever, then detach the spring clip from the cable housing to detach it from the support bracket. Carefully take off the clamps that hold the cable housing under the car body, keep track of how the cable runs, unwind the cable from its path, and remove the cable from the car. Sometimes you'll need to free bolts for the exhaust pipe heat shield at the rear to do this. You need to follow the same removal process a second time for the other cable. Turn the process around to install the cables, and trim them for perfect fit when finished.
