1990 Acura Legend Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Shock Absorber on 1990 Acura Legend?
A: Take off the front strut construction in Integra models, and remove the front shock absorber system in Legends. Take a close look for leakage, marks, breaks, and other visible damage in the shock absorber, then make sure the brown coil spring is whole and the yellow/rust spring seats are working correctly. You can save time and labor by getting new shock absorber assemblies complete with coil springs, ready to use. Check what they have available and compare their unit cost to taking yours apart. When mounting the shock absorber assembly in a vise, be sure to use wood or rags between the jaws to protect it, and hold back from tightening too hard. Jot down the damper's position on its base now and the spring's place within the damper unit so you can put everything back right when reassembling. Follow the manufacturer's guide and work the spring compressor tool to release all pressure from the spring assembly's metal base. First unscrew the self-locking nut on the damper cap, stop the shaft from turning with an Allen wrench while holding it steady, then put the disassembled parts from your work area in the same order they came out. Gently take the compressed spring out of its position and store it somewhere safe. Run off the remaining components from the damper shaft, and place them next to each other in the same original order. Put the bump stop, bump stop plate (when available), dust cover, and dust cover plate in place on top of the new damper unit, guide the damper shaft down all the way, and let it rest on the damper body. Place the coil spring on top of the shock absorber body, making sure the coil end fits down into the lowest part of the seat. Place the spring mounting and lower rubber cushions, a spacer, a metal block, the seal, more rubber cushions, and a one-way lock washer over the damper unit shaft while setting the new key nut in place. Make the bolt tight with a Allen key to ensure no movement of the shaft at its base. Loosen the compression device, then place the damper cap. Next, put in the circle tire and suspension components.
