  A: It's much easier to remove the external components if the engine is mounted on a portable engine stand, which can often be rented quite cheaply from an equipment rental yard. Before the engine is mounted on a stand, the driveplate should be removed from the engine. If a stand isn't available, it's possible to remove the external engine components with it blocked up on the floor, but be extra careful not to tip or drop the engine when working without a stand.
