Wear of wheel seals often causes oil leaks, which are relatively easy to replace by removing the drive axle from the vehicle. Sides of the transaxle where driveaxles connect, is the place these seals are placed. Raise the vehicle, then safely support it on jackstands, and if you discover the seal is leaking, lubricant should spill out of the sides of the transaxle below the seal. Prying the wheel seal out of the transaxle bore using a screwdriver or prybar, and inserting the tip into the grooves behind the seals. If removal is impossible, a special wheel seal removal tool available at auto parts store may prove necessary. A large section of pipe or a deep socket slightly smaller than the seal outside diameter should be used for the drift, seating the seal firmly in the bore. If the seals have been replaced, coat the seal lip with transaxle lubricant, and reinstall the driveaxle(s), being careful not to damage the lip of the new seal.
