Acura Legend Igniter

The Acura Legend Igniter is the electronic switch that interrupts the coil primary current to produce the high voltage spark to start and run the V6. Early first generation cars were equipped with a distributor-based Igniter that was guided by magnetic pickup pulses in conjunction with centrifugal and vacuum advance. In the second generation Legend models, the ignition system was an independent Igniter that was controlled by the engine computer and the crank sensor inputs to give exact timing. Both styles share the same job of chopping current so the collapsing field of the coil can jump to roughly 15,000 volts, but the computer-controlled version eliminates mechanical play, increasing power, economy and emissions control for Acura drivers. When an Igniter fails, the engine may crank without firing, so checking for test light flicker at the coil negative post or measuring resistance with a DVOM helps pinpoint the fault fast. Replacement is easy: unplug the harness, remove two screws, install the new Igniter and check for flicker while cranking. Owners of Acura sedans should also listen for the relay click feeding the module, as without it the Legend will stay silent.

Acura Legend Igniter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Is Inspecting the Igniter Advisable for Home Mechanics on an Acura Legend?
    A:
Checking the igniter on 1988 and later models is beyond the scope of the home mechanic, so it is advisable to take the vehicle to a dealer serviced apartment for diagnosis. Begin by removing the igniter cover and pulling out the igniter unit, ensuring to unplug it from the distributor case. Next, check for continuity in both directions between the A and 8 terminals on the igniter, noting that there should be continuity in only one direction. Then, connect an ohmmeter positive probe to terminal D and the negative probe to the igniter unit ground, ensuring the resistance is within the specified range. If the igniter fails either of these checks, it should be replaced, and when installing the new igniter, pack silicone grease in the connector housing.
