Checking the igniter on 1988 and later models is beyond the scope of the home mechanic, so it is advisable to take the vehicle to a dealer serviced apartment for diagnosis. Begin by removing the igniter cover and pulling out the igniter unit, ensuring to unplug it from the distributor case. Next, check for continuity in both directions between the A and 8 terminals on the igniter, noting that there should be continuity in only one direction. Then, connect an ohmmeter positive probe to terminal D and the negative probe to the igniter unit ground, ensuring the resistance is within the specified range. If the igniter fails either of these checks, it should be replaced, and when installing the new igniter, pack silicone grease in the connector housing.
