Acura Legend Release Bearing

Acura Legend Release Bearing allows the driver to cut engine power to the gearbox very quickly to make shifting feel light and precise. Nestled on the clutch housing, this Release Bearing moves along a hollow shaft and is pushed by a fork through either hydraulic pressure or a cable to press the pressure plate spring to release the clutch disc and then retreats when the pedal comes up to reestablish drive. The various years of the Acura nameplate have had the same basic design, though early Legend models tended to use a cable-actuated system while later cars favored hydraulics. The difference is the path of force delivery, rather than the bearing itself. Whichever setup is applied, a healthy Release Bearing is quiet, does not transmit pedal shudder, and does not cause gear grind. Worn out by long mileage, misaligned cables, broken seals, or abuse of the clutch produces rattling noises, pedal vibration, stiff operation, and hard shifting, indicating the time for a new Release Bearing. A damaged Release Bearing may even squeal while idling. Choosing the factory-specified thickness means that the Acura clutch stack has the correct spring pressure and keeps a Legend moving smoothly.

Acura Legend Release Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect and install the Clutch Disc, Clutch Fork, Pressure Plate and Release Bearing on Acura Legend?
    A:
Access to the clutch components is normally accomplished by removing the transaxle, leaving the engine in the vehicle. To support the clutch disc during removal, install a clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc hub. Carefully inspect the flywheel and pressure plate for indexing marks and turn each bolt a little at a time to loosen the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts. Inspect the flywheel for cracks, heat checking, grooves and other obvious defects and the lining on the clutch disc for loose rivets, distortion, cracks, broken springs and other obvious damage. Clean the flywheel and pressure plate machined surfaces with brake cleaner, lacquer thinner or acetone and position the clutch disc and pressure plate against the flywheel with the clutch held in place with an alignment tool. Center the clutch disc by ensuring the alignment tool extends through the splined hub and into the pocket in the crankshaft. Lubricate the inner groove of the release bearing and install the clutch release bearing. Install the transaxle and all components removed previously and tighten all fasteners.
