How to Maintain and Replace the Parking Brake Shoe on an Acura MDX?

Remove the brake disc. Measure the thickness of the lining material on the shoes. If the lining has worn down to 1 mm or less, the shoes must be replaced. Install the brake disc and the disc retaining screws. Adjust the rear parking brake shoes. Install the caliper bracket and brake caliper. Be sure to tighten the bolts. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specified. Break in the new shoes by performing the following procedure: Set and release the parking brake a few times. Set the parking brake at two to four clicks. Drive the vehicle one-quarter mile and do not exceed 30 miles per hour. Stop the vehicle and then RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE IMMEDIATELY. Allow the parking brake shoes and disc/drum to cool for 10 minutes. Set the parking brake and count the number of clicks that it travels. It should be between about four to six clicks - if it's not, check the parking brake adjustment at the shoes and then adjust the parking brake cable.

Acura MDX Parking Brake Shoe

By generating a firm wheel lock, the Acura MDX Parking Brake Shoe ensures that no unwanted rolling occurs once the driver sets the brake. Sitting inside the rear rotor hat on major model years, the Parking Brake Shoe presses its friction lining against the small internal drum through cable tension or, on later editions, an electric motor that tugs the same cables. Early Acura MDX generations applied a mechanical foot pedal and cable system. Current Acura models can add an electronic switch that may automatically engage when the shifter moves to Park.
