First, stay sure your ignition switch is fully in the Off position before starting these checks. Before starting work, turn off the ignition, pull off the insulation cover around the coil, and then unfreeze disconnected terminal on Legend models. In 1989 and 1990 models of the Legend with automatic transmission, though primary pin names differ, their testing remains identical. Separate the primary and secondary connections, as well as the coil's high-power cord. Using an ohmmeter, see how much resistance you get when you touch its probes to primary terminals A and D. Compare your results to these values. Keep the two probes connected to terminal A and the secondary terminal to measure the resistance and mark your results next to the rated ranges for the secondary terminals. Connect the probes to B and D terminals to determine the resistance, then match your reading with the standard figure. The graph readings may shift a bit depending on coil temperature, with these measurements taken from about 70-degree-eighty degree coils. If the coil passes all three checks, it's okay. Plug in the connectors. If it fails any of the above checks, replace it. Connect your cable to the negative terminal of your battery and see if everything works. Put pieces of numbered tape to show where the primary wires go. Disconnect both wires from the coil, then remove the thick cable wire from the electric coil. Lift the coil from its frame by taking out both bolts and releasing its support. Installation is the reverse of removal.
