Acura Legend Ignition Coil

The Acura Legend Ignition Coil transforms the 12-volt battery input into the high spike that jumps each spark plug gap and ignites the fuel mixture. The primary copper windings of the Ignition Coil, which are thick, as well as the secondary copper windings, which are thin, are covered with a plastic case having an iron core inside it. So, as drivers break the circuit in the ignition electronics of the engine, the magnetic field collapses, which pushes 15,000 to 20,000 volts into the secondary and out to the plugs. Acura Legend's early models had just one Ignition Coil, which passed the voltage through a distributor and rotor to six cylinders via long wires. The improvement to the platform adopted the waste-spark form of Ignition Coil pack that powered each pair of ignitions per crank turn with a single Ignition Coil. This reduced hardware, saving on energy loss through efficiency. Subsequent updates of the Legend introduced the coil-on-plug technology, which placed the Ignition Coil directly onto the spark plug for superior performance. Through the years, the Legend lineup has had the same intent, but the newer layouts made misfires rarer and troubleshooting easier for Acura drivers.

Acura Legend Ignition Coil Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to check and replace the Ignition Coil on an Acura Legend?
    A:
First, stay sure your ignition switch is fully in the Off position before starting these checks. Before starting work, turn off the ignition, pull off the insulation cover around the coil, and then unfreeze disconnected terminal on Legend models. In 1989 and 1990 models of the Legend with automatic transmission, though primary pin names differ, their testing remains identical. Separate the primary and secondary connections, as well as the coil's high-power cord. Using an ohmmeter, see how much resistance you get when you touch its probes to primary terminals A and D. Compare your results to these values. Keep the two probes connected to terminal A and the secondary terminal to measure the resistance and mark your results next to the rated ranges for the secondary terminals. Connect the probes to B and D terminals to determine the resistance, then match your reading with the standard figure. The graph readings may shift a bit depending on coil temperature, with these measurements taken from about 70-degree-eighty degree coils. If the coil passes all three checks, it's okay. Plug in the connectors. If it fails any of the above checks, replace it. Connect your cable to the negative terminal of your battery and see if everything works. Put pieces of numbered tape to show where the primary wires go. Disconnect both wires from the coil, then remove the thick cable wire from the electric coil. Lift the coil from its frame by taking out both bolts and releasing its support. Installation is the reverse of removal.
