Core plugs should be removed by knocking one side into the block and pulling them out with pliers.

To save time and avoid problems, follow this general order for reassembly: 1. Piston/connecting rod assemblies for various engine models 2. Crankshaft and main bearings 3. Rear main oil seal and retainer 4. Additional piston/connecting rod assemblies for other models 5. Oil pan baffle 6. Oil pump and pick-up 7. Oil pan 8. Cylinder head 9. Camshaft(s) and rocker arm assembly 10. Water pump 11. Timing belt and sprockets 12. Intake and exhaust manifolds 13. Timing belt covers 14. Valve cover 15. Flywheel/driveplate.

The primary consideration is the condition of the engine block.

If the cylinders are in good condition and within limits, and if proper piston-to-cylinder clearances can be maintained, rebore is unnecessary, and honing will suffice.

The engine must be disassembled in a specific order, starting with the intake and exhaust manifolds, valve cover, timing belt covers and bolts, timing belt and sprockets, rocker arm assembly and camshaft(s), cylinder head, water pump, oil pan, oil pump and pick-up tube, oil jets (for specific engine models), piston/connecting rod assemblies, rear main oil seal retainer, main bearing caps (or bearing cap bridge) and lower main bearings, and finally the crankshaft and upper main bearings.

Remove the drivebelt(s) and idler, disconnect the accelerator linkage and cruise control cable, unbolt the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor without disconnecting the hoses, and unbolt the alternator.
