How to replace the rear Crankshaft Seal without removing the oil pan or seal retainer on an 1990 Acura Legend?

For this procedure the transaxle will need to be removed from the vehicle and the flywheel/driveplate needs to be disconnected from the engine. The lip of the seal in the retainer bore is quite stiff and it's possible to cock the seal, or even damage the lip during installation, if the seal is replaced without dropping the oil pan or its seal retainer. If you opt to continue, remove the old seal once more using a screwdriver, be sure not to smudge the crankshaft surface, because this could allow the new seal to leak. The spring side gets installed on the new seal with the lip up and the crankshaft seal journal up and apply moly base grease to the journal and the lip. Then with care and assistance with something like a socket, section of pipe or special tool, drive the new seal into place square. Alternatively, the oil pan and seal retainer must be removed. The remaining steps are reversing the remove process.
