The camshaft bearing caps are removed along with the rocker arm assembly. To prevent the transaxle end of the camshaft from popping up due to
Timing Belt tension after removal, have an assistant hold the camshaft down and reinstall the bearing cap on that end to keep it in place until reassembly, assuming the timing belt remains installed. While the caps are off, inspect them and the camshaft bearing journals. Begin by removing the
Valve Cover and positioning the number one piston at Top Dead Center before removing the distributor. Have an assistant hold down the transaxle end of the camshaft, then loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually until the spring pressure is relieved. Lift the rocker arm and shaft assembly from the
Cylinder Head, removing the camshaft bearing caps, bolts, and rocker arm assembly. To clean the oil control orifice, thread a machine screw into the top and pull it up. If disassembly and inspection of the rocker arm assembly is desired, remove the retaining bolts and carefully slip off the rocker arms, springs, collars, and bearing caps, marking their relationships for proper reassembly. Clean all components thoroughly and inspect for wear and damage, checking the rocker arm faces, tips, and shaft surfaces for scoring or excessive wear, replacing any damaged parts. Ensure the oil holes in the shafts are clear. Lubricate all components with engine assembly lubricant or oil and reassemble the rocker arms onto the shafts, noting the markings and differences between left and right components. Replace the O-ring on the oil control orifice and install it in the cylinder head. Coat the camshaft lobes and journals with installation lubricant, apply anaerobic-type sealant to the cylinder head contact surfaces of bearing caps 1 and 5, and install the rocker arm assembly. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually in the proper sequence to the specified torque. Complete the installation in reverse order of removal, adjusting the valve clearance if necessary. Finally, run the engine to check for oil leaks and ensure proper operation.
