Remove the
Starter Motor by disconnecting the cable off the negative terminal of the battery. From here, you need to disconnect the large wire from solenoid to starter motor terminal. Solenoid screws removal and detachment from the gear housing. Remove the solenoid, check the overrunning clutch sliding it along its shaft; and if it does not slide freely, or if the clutch slips when the armature turns while grabbing the drive gear and putting on the drive gear, the clutch assembly must be replaced. The overrunning clutch assembly cannot be serviced and must be replaced if the gear is worn or damaged, because the gear can't be ordered separately. In addition, if the starter gear teeth are damaged, inspect the flywheel or driveplate ring gear for damage. The reverse of a removal is an installation.
