Supplemental Restraint System (SAS), or simply airbags, are standard on all models and consist of two airbags for driver and front seat passenger to protect occupants from serious injury from head on or frontal collisions. In the SRS system, there are an SRS unit having an impact sensor, a seating sensor, a self diagnosis circuit and a back up power circuit, which is located under the dash and airbag assemblies in the steering wheel and dash. LATER CR-V models have front seatbelt tensioners that are activated to take up slack in the seatbelts during an impact like airbags. Both impact and seating sensors have to be activated for airbags to deploy; if the battery fails a back up power provides the necessary power. The system has a self diagnosis circuit which will indicate system status by way of a light that should have went out after 6 seconds if all is well, but must be opened up and looked at by the professional immediately. While servicing components near the SRS, never disconnect electric connectors except when necessary and always disable the SAS system in advance-by disconnecting the battery cables and waiting three minutes. In order to disable the driver and passenger's side air bags, both panels must be removed and specific connectors must be disconnected. You can reconnect the airbag module and seat belt tensioner connectors when servicing, disconnecting the battery cables before connecting them again, with the ignition off. Disabling the SRS system and removing the airbag modules from the module cover plate piecewise, connecting and installing the airbag capsules is the airbag removal process, and the reverse process is installing. Once everything is done, the work must enable the SRS system.
