The transaxle must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure. Begin by removing the flywheel/driveplate. Before removing the Crankshaft Seal, it is very important to check the clearance between the seal and the outside edge of the retainer using a small ruler or caliper, and record the distance, as the new seal must not be driven in past this measurement. The seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or seal retainer; use a screwdriver and a rag to carefully pry the seal out of the housing, ensuring no nicks are made in the crankshaft seal surface. Apply a film of clean oil to the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal, then carefully tap the seal into place, working the stiff lip onto the seal journal of the crankshaft with a smooth object like the end of a socket extension, lubricating the journal and seal lip with multi-purpose grease. Tap the seal into the retainer with a seal driver, or if unavailable, use a large socket or piece of pipe with an outside diameter slightly smaller than that of the seal, taking care not to rush to avoid damaging the seal. The remaining steps are the reverse of removal, and finally, run the engine and check for oil leaks.
