Acura Integra Ignition Switch

The Acura Integra Ignition Switch lets the driver channel battery power to start and run the car while adding security against theft. Early models applied a steering column mounted Ignition Switch with a mechanical key that rotated through LOCK, ACC, ON and START positions, sending current to components, ignition, fuel injection and the starter. Government rules from 1970 demanded this column lock, so every Acura Integra of the classic generations relied on it, and the design also fixed the steering wheel and shifter in LOCK to deter joyriding. From the 1980s forward, a coded key joined the mechanical Ignition Switch, a small chip in the key communicating with the car computer, preventing the engine from cranking unless the code matched, a leap in protection for the Acura badge. The updated Integra generations have moved to a push-button style Ignition Switch, activated when a wireless fob is inside the cabin, the computer checks the brake pedal and gear selector then powers the starter, allowing component use with a tap. Regardless of style, symptoms like hard key turning, sudden stalling or dead components mean the Ignition Switch may be worn and replacement restores dependable performance unique to the Acura Integra lineage.

Acura Integra Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Ignition Switch on an Acura Integra?
    A:
Proceed with Civic and Integra models by disconnecting the negative battery cable followed by the positive cable and obtain the correct radio activation code when dealing with anti-theft systems. Start the process by removing both lower instrument panel cover and steering column covers. The wire harness trace from the ignition switch should lead down the steering column where the technicians need to disconnect connectors from both the fuse box and wiring harness. An inspection of the ignition switch must show proper continuity between its connector terminals while in each position; if this test fails then replace the switch. Place the key into position and rotate it to the Lock setting to remove the attachment screws for releasing the switch unit. Excise installation steps from removal actions. The lock cylinder should be assessed in every position for normal wear and looseness while checking if each key position lines up with the housing markings; complete replacement of the assembly becomes necessary if any fault is detected. Disengage the negative battery terminal before moving to disconnect the positive cable. Afterward remove the steering column covers with the instrument panel lower assembly. Lower the steering column by removing its ignition switch followed by its retaining nuts. Drill off the two shear-head bolts securing the lock assembly to the steering column by first making head dimples and using a 3/16-inch bit. This operation will separate the clamp and enable removal of the assembly. Slightly tighten the bolts of the new assembly first without key insertion then check the lock cylinder functions with key insertion. Set the bolts to break their heads off from tightening them before raising the column in position then secure the nuts and bolts while tightening the steering column-to-instrument panel flange nuts to 108 in-lbs and the retaining collar clamp bolts to 16 ft-lbs. Conclude the repair by placing covers on the ignition switch, instrument panel and steering column and finally reconnect the positive battery cable then the negative cable.
