Acura Integra Starter Motor

Acura Integra Starter Motor provides the jolt of mechanical movement needed to wake up the engine. It converts the electricity from the battery into motion to start the car. The Starter Motor consists of an externally mounted solenoid connected directly to the battery, heavy gauge wiring, and an internal armature with coils of field on each side or permanent magnets. When the key is turned to the START position, current excites these parts, causing the armature to whirl, which in turn causes the pinion gear to mesh with the flywheel, cranking the engine until it is running on its own. Once ignition catches, an overrunning clutch disengages the Starter Motor to avoid damage. Early versions of Acura in the Integra family employed a straightforward direct-drive Starter Motor that linked the armature and pinion for solid but heavier operation. Later generations adopted a gear-reduction version of the Starter Motor, where a compact gear set was inserted to allow a smaller motor to turn at high speed but with greater torque, achieving greater cold-start reliability and saving weight. Protective circuits including neutral and clutch safety switches ensure that the device cannot engage while the car is in gear, completing the system on all Acura Integra models.

  • Q: How to Detach and Remove the Starter Motor on an Acura Integra?
    A:
Before disconnecting, take the correct anti-theft system activation code for your radio. When working on an Integra, take out the air duct that brings air to the air filter. Red mark all cables and carefully pull them free from the starter motor solenoid plugs. Also remove any clips holding wiring to the starter. Pull out the bracket attached to the transaxle that keeps the automatic wiring tube in place. Disconnect the power wires going to the starter, then take off the bolts in both upper and lower locations that keep the starter attached to the transaxle. Unbolt the(gc) which connects the end cover to the gear housing, and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal.
