This procedure applies to both power and manual Rack And Pinion assemblies. When working on a vehicle equipped with a manual Rack And Pinion, ignore any references made to the power steering system. Begin by working under the dash to remove the steering joint cover by popping off the upper and lower clamps and sliding off the cover, ensuring the two nibs on the flange at the lower end are pushed into the holes in the floor upon reinstallation. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft universal joint to the Rack And Pinion input shaft before removing the pinch bolt. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands while applying the parking brake. For Legend models, remove the Rack And Pinion shield by taking out the four retaining bolts. Place a drain pan under the Rack And Pinion for power steering only, disconnect the power steering fluid lines, and cap them to prevent contamination and loss of fluid. Separate the tie-rod ends from the
Steering Knuckle arms. On Integra models, disconnect the shift linkage from the transaxle. Support the Rack And Pinion and remove the right (passenger side) mounting bolts, then lower the unit, separate the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion input shaft, and remove the Rack And Pinion from the vehicle. For installation, raise the Rack And Pinion into position and connect the intermediate shaft, aligning the marks. Install the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and washers, tightening them securely. Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckle arms, install the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt, and tighten it securely. Reinstall the steering joint cover and clamps, ensuring the two tabs on the flange at the lower end of the shield align with the holes in the floor. Connect the power steering hoses/lines to the Rack And Pinion and fill the power steering pump reservoir with the recommended fluid. For Legend models, install the Rack And Pinion shield, and for Integra models, reconnect the shift linkage. Finally, lower the vehicle and bleed the steering system.
