    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to replace the front crankshaft seal on an Acura MDX? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the crankshaft position sensor, then remove the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. Carefully pry the seal out of the engine with a screwdriver or seal removal tool. If you use a screwdriver, don't scratch the housing bore or damage the crankshaft. If the crankshaft is scratched, the new seal will end up leaking. Clean the oil seal bore and coat the outer edge of the new seal with a small amount of engine oil to ease installation. Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip. Using a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, carefully drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Make sure it's installed squarely and driven in to the same depth as the original. Reinstall the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal.

    Q:
How to remove and replace a rear crankshaft seal without removing the oil pan or seal retainer on the Acura MDX? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the driveplate. The seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or removing the seal retainer. However, the lip of the seal is quite stiff and it's possible to cock the seal in the retainer bore or damage it during installation. Pry out the old seal with a screwdriver. Carefully pry the rear main seal out - don't damage the surface of the crankshaft or the new seal will leak. Apply multi-purpose grease to the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal, then carefully drive the new seal into place with a seal driver. The lip is stiff, so carefully work it onto the seal journal of the crankshaft. Don't rush it or you may damage the seal. Drive the seal in squarely and only until it is flush with the back of the seal plate, no further. Make sure the spring side is facing in.

    Q:
How to replace the front crankshaft seal and ensure proper installation on an Acura TL? Posted by Customer
    A:
Then unhook the crankshaft position sensor, pull the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket. To carefully remove the seal out of the engine, use a screwdriver or seal removal tool; make sure to not ruin the bore of the housing, or damage the crankshaft, because any scratches can cause issues with a new seal. Clean out the oil seal bore and smear a little engine oil on the outside of the new seal to help with installation; grease the lip of the seal with multi-purpose grease. With a seal driver or a socket with outside diameter slightly less than the seal's outside diameter, tap the new seal in place with a hammer, making sure it's placed square and at same depth as original. Remove the crankshaft belt and crankshaft sprocket followed by reinstalling the crankshaft position sensor and crankshaft sprocket, along with the crankshaft belt. The rest of the installation follows the reverse order of removal. Once you've gone through and installed the engine, run it and check for oil leaks at the front seal.
