Acura TL Crankshaft Seal

The Acura TL Crankshaft Seal helps keep the oil in the crankcase of the engine. This helps to keep the engine lubricated and protect the internal parts from rubbing together. Seated at the front of the engine, the Crankshaft Seal is a round ring that consists of durable metal to provide strength and flexible rubber to hug the rotating shaft and create a tight barrier that prevents leaks from developing while the Crankshaft spins thousands of times per minute. Over years of mileage, heat and constant motion can cause the rubber to harden, and the drips can leave telltale spots under the car as well as lower oil levels. Drivers who notice seepage, sudden oil drops, or a burning smell should suspect the Crankshaft Seal before more serious damage develops. Acura, over successive TL generations, stayed on the same style of metal and rubber type instead of switching to felt and PTFE designs as seen in other manufacturers, so any differences are based more on size dimensions that correspond to the particular engine. Thanks to this time-tested layout, the Crankshaft Seal rarely is the early failure point, but once the fatigue sets in any Acura TL past the high mileage mark, timely change is of prime importance. Ignoring a bad Crankshaft Seal invites oil starvation, could impact future TL reliability, and may tarnish the reliable Acura name.

Acura TL Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal and ensure proper installation on an Acura TL?
    A:
Then unhook the crankshaft position sensor, pull the Timing Belt and crankshaft sprocket. To carefully remove the seal out of the engine, use a screwdriver or seal removal tool; make sure to not ruin the bore of the housing, or damage the crankshaft, because any scratches can cause issues with a new seal. Clean out the oil seal bore and smear a little engine oil on the outside of the new seal to help with installation; grease the lip of the seal with multi-purpose grease. With a seal driver or a socket with outside diameter slightly less than the seal's outside diameter, tap the new seal in place with a hammer, making sure it's placed square and at same depth as original. Remove the crankshaft belt and crankshaft sprocket followed by reinstalling the crankshaft position sensor and crankshaft sprocket, along with the crankshaft belt. The rest of the installation follows the reverse order of removal. Once you've gone through and installed the engine, run it and check for oil leaks at the front seal.
