Acura Legend Ignition Switch

Acura Legend Ignition Switch is the gateway to powering the engine and components that allow drivers to power on the car or turn it off with one turn or a button press. Early Acura Legend models had a steering column mounted Ignition Switch paired to a lock cylinder, so battery power flowed only after the proper key was moved from LOCK to ACC to ON and then START positions, sending current to the starter, fuel, and spark circuits while locking the wheel when removed. In the 1980s, the brand introduced coded keys, having a chip embedded in them that had to match the computer, preventing theft even if the cylinder was forced and the Ignition Switch turned. Recent Legend editions dispensed entirely with the mechanical key in favor of a push button system, the fob remaining in a pocket while radio signals verify the identity, brake pedal position, and gearbox park status prior to the activation of the Ignition Switch electronically. Later buyers of Acura Legends liked the quieter start provided by refined Ignition Switch circuitry. Regardless of the year, each Acura Legend uses its switch design to balance security with everyday ease.

Acura Legend Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Ignition Switch on an Acura Legend?
    A:
Uncover the steering wheel, and find the ignition switch/key lock harness connection from there to the fuse box. Disconnect the cable here. Look for two way signals (continuity) from the connector while you insert keys into different positions. When the continuity doesn't match what's listed, put the key into Off mode, loosen two screws, lift the switch off the steering column, making sure the notch on the switch lines up with the projection on the lock when you install it. Install the steering column cover. Look at all lock cylinder settings and check that it runs smoothly and correctly matches the key position visibility on the housing, then replace the part if it's damaged or worn. If you own a Legend, first disconnect the ignition key light. Insert a small tool into a notch on the dashboard and push the tool in until you feel the lock cylinder release. Then pull the cylinder out of its housing. Put the key in lock, put the lock cylinder straight, put the key almost to lock, push the cylinder in until it hits the housing, then finish turning the key all the way to lock while pressing and pushing the cylinder till it clicks. Finally, install the steering column cover.
