- Q: How to inspect and replace the Neutral Safety Switch on an Acura Legend?A:Test engine starting in each shift lever position, and confirm that the starter functions exclusively in Park and Neutral. Should the starter not operate or engage in positions other than Park or Neutral, initially inspect the Shift Cable adjustment. If the shift cable is properly adjusted yet the issue persists, turn attention to the Neutral Safety Switch, which on these models also integrates the backup light switch. Remove the center console and disconnect the connector from the Neutral Safety Switch. Examine the connector for continuity as the shift lever is placed in different positions. On 1989 and later Legend models, conduct the continuity check while slightly moving the shift lever within its free play range. If continuity is absent during this movement, the switch's position can be adjusted. In Park, adjust the switch's position by loosening its bolts and moving it toward the Drive detent until continuity is established between terminals 1 and 7. If the continuity doesn't match the specified conditions on all models, replace the switch. To replace it, remove the retaining bolts and detach the switch from the gear shift selector mounting bracket.
