Acura Legend Neutral Safety Switch

The Acura Legend Neutral Safety Switch provides a measure of safety for the driver by keeping the engine from being able to crank in any position other than park or neutral. At the highly basic level, the function of the Neutral Safety Switch is to monitor the position of the shifter and to interrupt the starter circuit whenever the lever slides away from those two safe shifter positions, thereby preventing power from flowing to the starter relay until the conditions are correct. This is a simple enough piece of logic, but one that keeps a stalled car from lurching forward or backward in an unexpected manner, an important safeguard to every Legend owner. Throughout production, the model continued to feature a simple and straightforward Neutral Safety Switch mounted along the transmission linkage whereby the gear selected by the driver directly controls the contacts within. No alternate versions like the clutch-activated ones were introduced, ensuring that every Acura sedan in the series relies on the same tried-and-true Neutral Safety Switch layout year in and year out. If the engine refuses to start, a check of continuity at the Neutral Safety Switch is the first test since wear or corrosion may cut the starter feed while everything else appears normal, as is well known to long-time Legend drivers who realize what a godsend this unobtrusive device can be. By silently carrying out this gatekeeping function, the Acura serves to protect both drivetrain elements and pedestrians alike.

Acura Legend Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and replace the Neutral Safety Switch on an Acura Legend?
    A:
Test engine starting in each shift lever position, and confirm that the starter functions exclusively in Park and Neutral. Should the starter not operate or engage in positions other than Park or Neutral, initially inspect the Shift Cable adjustment. If the shift cable is properly adjusted yet the issue persists, turn attention to the Neutral Safety Switch, which on these models also integrates the backup light switch. Remove the center console and disconnect the connector from the Neutral Safety Switch. Examine the connector for continuity as the shift lever is placed in different positions. On 1989 and later Legend models, conduct the continuity check while slightly moving the shift lever within its free play range. If continuity is absent during this movement, the switch's position can be adjusted. In Park, adjust the switch's position by loosening its bolts and moving it toward the Drive detent until continuity is established between terminals 1 and 7. If the continuity doesn't match the specified conditions on all models, replace the switch. To replace it, remove the retaining bolts and detach the switch from the gear shift selector mounting bracket. On Legend models, while installing a new switch, position the switch slider and shift lever in Neutral, align the slider with the shift lever pin, and secure the switch over the pin using the bolts. The installation process is the reverse of removal, and for Legend models, ensure that the switch slider and shift lever are in Neutral during installation, securely fastening the switch in place with the bolts.
