- Q: What are the safety precautions and steps for performing routine preventive maintenance on the battery on an Acura Legend?A:Always perform regular maintenance on your car's battery to ensure that you can always depend on it when starting the vehicle, but take safety precautions. Some of the tools and items that should be available include; eye protector such as goggles or face shield, baking soda, petroleum jelly, battery post/ cable cleaner, felt washers treated with red oil, puller and rubber gloves. When working with a battery make sure you turn off the engine and disconnect the negative terminal cable. Batteries produce hydrogen gas which is very explosive and flammable hence avoid sparks in order not to ignite this gas near the battery or charge it in a well ventilated area. The electrolyte in a battery is sulfuric acid an extremely poisonous corrosive substance so wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and avoid any contact with skin/clothing. Inspect for external damage, loose connections or corrosion especially around terminals; remove if corroded then clean the battery. Use a brush with baking soda solution to clean both clamps and terminals of cables before greasing them with petrolatum jelly. Additionally, check if there is any need for cleaning of plastic carrier where batteries are placed after removing them from their original positions. Use treated felt washers around the terminals coated with petroleum jelly or grease before reinstalling clamps (ensure that last one is connected last). Keep in mind however not to overtighten clamps as well as nuts while installing hold-down clamp .
